Project full title
A European Consortium for Lysosomal Storage Diseases.

Pathologies
Lysosomal Storage Diseases (LSDs) are rare (overall prevalence of 1:5000 to 1:8000), each due to a specific lysosomal enzyme deficiency leading to intracellular storage of a variety of undegraded substrates (sphingolipids, glycosaminoglycans, glycoproteins and glycogen) in different tissues. Among the 40 LSDs presently known, EUCLYD will focus on: Gaucher disease, Pompe disease, Mucopolysaccharidosis VI (MPS VI) and Multiple Sulfatase Deficiency (MSD). The four specific LSDs chosen in this research programme have each unique characteristics, they all differ for the type of stored material and for the involvement of different tissues. Project mission
The EUCLYD consortium aims at establishing a unique research programme to study Lysosomal Storage Diseases (LSDs) by promoting collaborative scientific interactions between outstanding communities of basic and clinical investigators. To improve human health, scientific discoveries must be translated into practical applications. EUCLYD proposes to study the mechanisms underlying the symptoms of LSDs to then progress towards clinical applications through the development of novel therapeutic approaches with the final goal of moving from “bench to bedside”. > [Pages Project + Aims + Impact]

Partners
The EUCLYD consortium brings together six leading European scientists (the Partners) in the field of Lysosomal Storage Diseases (LSDs). The consortium integrates clinical facilities (patients, cells-tissue and DNA samples) with basic research resources (animal models, cell biology and biochemical techniques). This allows proposing an experimental plan in which both aspects are well balanced: easy access to patients and availability of animal models of diseases. > [Page Partners]
